DaVinci Resolve to Ableton Live Audio Workflow
DaVinci Resolve has become one of the most popular video editing platforms thanks to its professional-grade color correction, Fairlight audio page, and free tier. But many producers and composers still prefer Ableton Live for music production and advanced audio work.
This guide explains how to move your DaVinci Resolve audio timeline into Ableton Live while preserving clip positions, fades, and automation data.
Exporting AAF from DaVinci Resolve
- Open your project in DaVinci Resolve
- Navigate to the Deliver page
- In the Render Settings, select AAF as the export format
- Configure audio settings -- use WAV for best quality
- Add to render queue and render
DaVinci Resolve exports a complete AAF file containing all audio track data, clip positions, and timeline metadata from the Fairlight audio page.
Converting to Ableton Live
Use Abletonlive.aaf to convert the Resolve AAF file into an Ableton Live Set. The tool reads the Fairlight timeline structure and generates a matching Ableton session with all clips in their exact positions.
Common Use Cases
- Film scoring -- compose and mix music in Ableton for a Resolve video project
- Sound design -- add complex sound design using Ableton instruments and Max for Live
- Podcast production -- move podcast edits from Resolve to Ableton for final mastering
- Music videos -- sync edited audio back to the production DAW
Fairlight vs Ableton Live for Audio
While DaVinci Resolve's Fairlight page is capable for basic audio editing and mixing, Ableton Live offers significant advantages for creative audio work: real-time audio warping, Session View for non-linear production, a massive library of instruments and effects, and deep integration with hardware controllers.
